History

IKRAM – The Foundation for Empowerment of Muslim Women was officially incorporated on August 5, 2014 in the Commonwealth of Virginia in response to the growing number of Muslim women in the United States struggling to re-create their lives and identity after divorce or widowhood.

In 2012, in response to the increase of divorced Muslim women, the Circle of siSTARhood support group was established by Mariam Azimi M. at the ADAMS Center in Sterling, VA. The Circle of siSTARhood provides social support for divorced Muslim women through meetings and activities. However, as the needs of its members became more apparent, the idea of establishing a nonprofit organization began to formulate.

A small, yet dedicated group of the community – Dr.Ilham Altalib, Iman Al Shingeiti, Margaret Farchtchi, along with Mariam Azimi – came together and established IKRAM Foundation for Empowerment of Muslim Women. Following the verse “Indeed We have honored the children of Adam.” (Quran 17:70) from which IKRAM‘s name is derived, we strive to empower and ennoble divorced and widowed Muslim women through education.

Ikram’s flagship program offers financial assistance to low-income divorced and widowed Muslim women interested in pursuing education or career training. In addition to educational grants, IKRAM focuses on bringing the community educational workshops for promoting healthy marriage and prevention of divorce, alleviating stigmas associated with divorce or widowhood, as well as wellness and confidence building workshops.

Iman Al Shingeiti has passed on and she has left us with a legacy that will always remind us of her. IKRAM has established the Iman Al Shingeiti Scholarship Fund to commemorate her dedication and hard work. She will always be in our thoughts and prayers.
